Anuradha is the star of Mitra, the Aditya whose name means friend and whose domain is the alliance kept in good faith. Its symbol is a lotus, which grows in water that is not clean and is not stained by it, and in some accounts a staff. Its shakti is radhana, the power of worship — of accomplishing something through sustained devotion rather than through force. Saturn rules it, in Mars’s sign of Scorpio.
Ketu here indicates that the devoting is finished.
Natives with this placement are loyal in a way that costs them nothing and impresses everybody. They stay with people through material that would end most friendships. They serve causes and teachers and institutions without needing to be asked twice. What has gone is the ardour. The devotion runs on, entirely reliable, with nothing burning underneath it.

The Nakshatra: Saturn, Mitra, and the Lotus
Anuradha occupies the middle of Scorpio, from 3°20’ to 16°40’. Scorpio is the sign of what is underneath — of intensity, secrecy, and the material that people do not put on the surface — and Anuradha is the point in it where that intensity becomes bearable, because it is shared. This is the nakshatra of the relationship that survives knowing.
Saturn rules it, and Saturn’s contribution is duration. Anuradha’s devotion is not the ecstatic kind. It is the kind that turns up for the eleventh year, in bad weather, without being thanked. Saturn also supplies the delay: things in this nakshatra take longer than they should, and are more durable when they arrive.
Mitra presides. He is paired in the Vedic material with Varuna, and the division between them is instructive. Varuna governs the oath enforced by consequence — the contract with a penalty. Mitra governs the bond held by good faith, where nothing enforces it except the fact that both parties intend to keep it. The word mitra becomes the ordinary word for friend in most Indic languages. What Anuradha is about is the alliance that does not need a mechanism.
The lotus is the more useful of the two symbols. It roots in mud, grows through opaque water, and opens on the surface without carrying any of the mud up with it. The tradition is not saying that the water is clean. It is saying that the flower is not compromised by where it grew, which is a fair description of what devotion has to do in Scorpio.
Radhana, the shakti, is worship in the sense of accomplishment-by-devotion — getting somewhere by staying with something rather than by attacking it. It is the opposite method to Vishakha’s, which is the nakshatra immediately before it.
What Ketu Signifies
Ketu is the descending node of the Moon, the point at which the lunar orbit cuts the ecliptic downward. It has no disc and no light. In the Puranic account it is the severed lower body of Svarbhanu, immortal because the nectar had already gone down, blind because the eyes departed with the head.
In a chart it marks completion rather than desire. The nakshatra Ketu occupies names a domain the soul has already worked through: capability without appetite, competence that arrived without training, and a flatness located exactly where the person is most able.
The detachment is a residue, not an attainment. It confers nothing by itself and it was not chosen, which is why it is so often felt as a defect.
Ketu also indicates psychic permeability, unsourced knowledge and the recurring sense of repetition. It governs moksha, since release becomes available only where the work is done. And it indicates rather than causes, which is the basis of the Jain reading below.
Ketu in Anuradha: The Interaction
Loyalty operates without warmth behind it. These natives stay. Through illness, through disgrace, through long unrewarding stretches, through material that would give most people a reason to leave. Asked what keeps them there, they usually cannot produce an answer that sounds adequate, because the honest answer is that leaving has never presented itself as an option. The behaviour is admirable and the feeling that ought to accompany it is faint.
Friendship is the medium and intimacy is the gap. Anuradha is the nakshatra most associated with genuine friendship, and this placement generally has a great many people who consider it a close friend. What those people tend to say, if pressed, is that they do not know very much about the native. The access runs one way. This is not withholding; it is that the wish to be known has been spent.
Devotion arrives already spent. Many with this placement have a religious or discipular history that ended: a teacher followed for years, a tradition practised seriously, a community given a decade. Frequently it ended without a rupture, simply by the ardour running out. The apparatus of practice remains and is often kept up. The heat is not there and its absence is quietly grieved.
Difficulty is unusually well tolerated. Scorpio material — betrayal, crisis, illness, the parts of a life people do not describe at dinner — is handled by this placement with a steadiness that other people find stabilising. Ketu removes the alarm and Saturn supplies the endurance. These natives are frequently the person a family or an organisation turns to when something has gone badly wrong.
Advancement in a hierarchy without any appetite for it. Anuradha classically produces the person who rises through an organisation by being reliable rather than by competing. With Ketu this happens and is not enjoyed. It is common to find these natives senior, well regarded, and entirely unmoved by the position.
Bonds that should end do not. The counterpart to the loyalty. Because leaving does not present itself as an option, arrangements that have become harmful persist. This is the placement’s most serious practical risk and it is rarely visible from inside, since the same disposition that sustains a good bond sustains a bad one identically.
The body carries it low and internally. Anuradha governs the bowels, and Scorpio the eliminative and reproductive organs. Complaints tend to be internal, chronic and slow to be reported, which fits a placement that does not register its own distress promptly. The reporting delay is the risk more than the complaint.
The Four Padas
Each pada spans 3°20’. In Anuradha the navamsa sequence runs Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio.
Pada 1: 3°20’ to 6°40’ Scorpio — Leo navamsa (Sun)
The most visible and most authoritative pada. The Sun gives the devotion a public dimension: leadership of a community, stewardship of an institution, the role of the person everyone can name. The Ketu detachment lands on the ego, so these natives hold position without identifying with it, which makes them unusually trustworthy custodians. The shadow is a public role that has entirely replaced a private life. The work is a relationship in which the native has no standing at all.
Pada 2: 6°40’ to 10°00’ Scorpio — Virgo navamsa (Mercury)
The most practical and most service-oriented pada. Mercury turns the devotion into daily competence: administration, medicine, research, the unspectacular work by which an institution is actually held together. The Ketu detachment attaches to standards, so the native is exacting on behalf of the work and negligent about their own conditions. The shadow is a load carried silently until it becomes a health matter. The work is stating what is being carried, before it becomes obvious to a doctor.
Pada 3: 10°00’ to 13°20’ Scorpio — Libra navamsa (Venus)
The most relational pada and the most concerned with partnership as such. Venus softens the Scorpio intensity and gives it social grace. Strong for counselling, diplomacy, negotiation, and work conducted in pairs. The Ketu detachment attaches to relationship, producing someone who is genuinely good at partnership and does not need one, which is difficult for whoever is in it with them. The shadow is a pleasantness that prevents anything real being said. The work is disagreement, out loud, inside a bond the native intends to keep.
Pada 4: 13°20’ to 16°40’ Scorpio — Scorpio navamsa (Mars) — vargottama
Vargottama, and the most concentrated version of the placement. Rashi and navamsa agree, and Mars rules both, so the Scorpio material runs undiluted: depth, secrecy, endurance, and the willingness to go into what other people avoid. Strong signature for occult study, psychotherapy, investigation, palliative care and crisis work. The psychic sensitivity is genuine here. The shadow is a devotion to something genuinely destructive, held with the same steadiness as everything else. The work is the question this pada never asks itself, which is whether the thing being served deserves it.
Vimshottari Dasha: When This Placement Speaks
Two dashas activate this placement. Saturn, as nakshatra lord, runs nineteen years — the longest of the planetary periods after Venus. Ketu’s own runs seven.
Saturn mahadasha. Nineteen years in which Anuradha’s material is delivered through Saturn’s channels: duty, endurance, delay, structure, the elderly, and work that produces results only at the end. For this placement the period is long, heavy and usually productive, and the characteristic experience is of a commitment being tested by time rather than by any single event. Positions of responsibility arrive in it. So do the years in which the native carries something for a great many people and is not asked how they are.
Ketu mahadasha. Seven years in which the bonds come apart. What goes is whatever was being sustained by loyalty alone — the friendship that had become obligation, the institution the native had outgrown a decade earlier, the teacher who was no longer teaching anything. The dissolutions are quiet. Anuradha Ketu does not have arguments; it simply stops attending, and the other party frequently learns what happened much later.
Antardashas within the Ketu mahadasha:
| Antardasha | Length | Character with Ketu in Anuradha |
|---|---|---|
| Ketu–Ketu | 4.9 months | Sharpest withdrawal; strongest dream and psychic material |
| Ketu–Venus | 14 months | Friendship and partnership examined; the longest sub-period |
| Ketu–Sun | 4.2 months | Position and father; brief, and exposing for pada 1 |
| Ketu–Moon | 7 months | The emotional cost of long loyalty finally surfaces |
| Ketu–Mars | 4.9 months | Sign lord: crisis, surgery, the one window in which this placement will act sharply |
| Ketu–Rahu | 12.6 months | Full axis live; foreign material, unconventional attachments |
| Ketu–Jupiter | 11.2 months | Teachers appear or are finally released |
| Ketu–Saturn | 13.3 months | Nakshatra lord within Ketu’s period: the core of the placement |
| Ketu–Mercury | 11.9 months | The period is understood, articulated, often written |
Ketu antardasha elsewhere. Fixed by mahadasha lord: 4.2 months in Sun, 7 in Moon, 4.9 in Mars, 12.6 in Rahu, 11.2 in Jupiter, 13.3 in Saturn, 11.9 in Mercury, 14 in Venus. The Saturn–Ketu antardasha of 13.3 months is the most concentrated activation of this placement available, and is usually where a long-standing commitment is finally reconsidered.
The Rahu Axis: Krittika and Rohini
Rahu sits opposite in Krittika padas 3–4 or Rohini padas 1–2, in Taurus.
Anuradha serves. It stays, endures, holds a bond through difficulty, and locates its worth in what it has been faithful to. Taurus does not operate that way. Krittika is Agni’s cutting fire: discrimination, the separating of the true from the false, and the willingness to end something. Rohini is growth — Brahma’s star, fertility, beauty, the enjoyment of what has been grown, and the frank pleasure of having something for oneself.
The assignment is therefore the cut and the harvest. Ketu in Anuradha has fully mastered fidelity. What it has not done is discriminate between a bond worth keeping and one that is merely being kept, or receive rather than serve, or take pleasure in something that belongs to it alone.
The reconciliation is not to become disloyal. It is to make the loyalty a judgement rather than a reflex, which requires the Krittika faculty this placement does not naturally use. And the Rohini end asks for something simpler and harder: to be, occasionally, the one who is looked after.
Where the Work Sits
A difficult placement marks where work has been assigned. It does not predict failure.
The bond that should have ended. The most serious assignment. Because leaving does not occur to this placement, harmful arrangements persist for years. The practical test is external: describing the arrangement plainly to somebody outside it and listening to their reaction rather than explaining it away.
Access that runs one way. These natives know a great deal about their friends and are known by almost none of them. The correction is deliberate disclosure to one person, repeated, until it stops feeling like an imposition.
Distress reported late. Physical and emotional difficulty here is noticed by the native long after it is visible to others, and reported later still. Scheduled checks rather than symptom-driven ones are worth more with this placement than with most.
Devotion that was never re-examined. The ardour ends and the practice continues, sometimes for decades, without anyone asking whether it is still the right practice. Reopening the question is not disloyalty. It is the only way the commitment becomes a choice again.
Nothing kept for oneself. A life composed entirely of what is owed to others is sustainable here for a very long time and is not the same as a life. One thing that belongs to the native alone, and is not useful to anyone, is a legitimate assignment.
The Jain Reading
Jain thought files astrology under the nimitta-shastras, the sciences of signs. A nimitta indicates; it does not produce. The graha stands to a life as a gauge stands to a pressure — informative, accurate, and causally inert.
Anuradha touches Jain doctrine at an unusually specific point, because mitri, friendliness, is the first of the four bhavanas — the reflections a practitioner is instructed to cultivate. The full set is maitri, friendliness towards all beings; pramoda, gladness at the qualities of others; karuna, compassion for the suffering; and madhyastha, equanimity towards those who cannot be reached. Anuradha’s deity, Mitra, names the first of these directly.
Ketu in Anuradha indicates a soul in which a great deal of this has already been accomplished, and the exact shape of the accomplishment is worth reading carefully. What is present is maitri and karuna — the disposition of friendliness and the steadiness with suffering — running as ordinary equipment rather than as effort. What is thin is pramoda, gladness, which is the one of the four that requires appetite, and which is precisely what Ketu removes.
The Jain frame would also note a hazard specific to the fourth bhavana. Madhyastha is equanimity towards what cannot be changed, and it is not the same as the failure to discriminate. This placement is at risk of using something that resembles equanimity as a reason to remain in an arrangement that right conduct would end. Detachment which was never chosen is not equanimity; it is only the absence of a pull. Distinguishing them is the doctrinal work this nakshatra sets.
Appeasement is beside the point. There is nothing to appease. What remains is conduct.
What the tradition offers instead:
- Tapas. Fasting by degree, from navkarsi through to upvas. This placement will endure almost anything, so the value here is not in the severity but in the fact that the austerity is undertaken for the native’s own account rather than on somebody’s behalf.
- Samayik. Forty-eight minutes of equanimity, seated. Anuradha Ketu will use the time to hold someone else in mind; the instruction is that the practice is not for anybody.
- Pratikraman. Structured retrospection against the vows, with attention to the four bhavanas and specifically to where steadiness was used in place of discrimination.
- Dana. Giving, and specifically abhaydana, the gift of fearlessness. This placement gives constantly; the discipline is to give with a stated limit, since the unlimited version is what leads to the arrangements that should have ended.
- Kshama. Forgiveness asked and granted, at Kshamavani and wherever it is owed. Owed here more often to the native than by them, and accepting it is the harder half.
- Swadhyay. Study, useful here on the bhavanas themselves, and on the distinction between madhyastha and mere indifference, which is this placement’s central practical confusion.
Not recommended: gemstones. A stone must be mined, and mining is himsa to earth-bodied beings, prithvikaya, which Jain cosmology counts as living. Cat’s eye for Ketu, blue sapphire for Saturn, and every proposed substitute fall under the same objection. It is doctrinal and admits no workaround.
Not recommended: fire rituals. Homa and havan are himsa to fire-bodied beings, tejaskaya, and to whatever the flame consumes. This applies regardless of the mantra used or the intention behind it.
Both also mistake the indicator for the agent. See the full Jain position on remedies.
Common Questions
Why do I stay in things long after I should have left? Because Anuradha’s whole method is staying and Ketu has removed the appetite that would ordinarily register the cost. The disposition that sustains a good bond sustains a bad one in exactly the same way, which is why the judgement has to come from outside rather than from feeling.
Everyone considers me a close friend and I do not feel close to anyone. Is that this? It is a recognisable signature. The friendliness is genuine and the access runs one way, because the wish to be known is the part that has been spent. It responds to deliberate disclosure rather than to more contact.
I lost faith in a practice I gave years to. Was that a failure? Not in the sense usually meant. This placement frequently exhausts a devotion rather than abandoning it, and the apparatus of practice often continues afterwards. Whether to continue is worth deciding openly rather than by drift, and either answer is available.
Is Anuradha Ketu good for career? It tends to produce steady advancement through reliability rather than competition, and a senior position that the native is not much moved by. The risk is not failure but a working life composed entirely of obligations that were never chosen.

Frequently asked questions
↳ What does Ketu in Anuradha Nakshatra mean?
Anuradha spans Scorpio 3deg20-16deg40 and is ruled by Saturn, with Mitra, the god of friendship and good-faith alliance, as its presiding deity and a lotus as its symbol. Ketu carries detachment, past-life residue and what the soul has already finished. So this placement indicates completed mastery of devotion, loyalty and the sustaining of a bond through difficulty: fidelity that runs reliably with no ardour underneath it. The nakshatra lord matters more than the sign here, because it governs the Vimshottari dasha sequence the placement will run through.
↳ Who rules Anuradha Nakshatra, and why does that matter?
Saturn rules Anuradha. That matters for two practical reasons. First, the Saturn mahadasha of nineteen years will activate everything this Ketu placement indicates, and will test it by duration rather than by event. Second, the condition of Saturn elsewhere in the chart modifies the placement substantially, so a well-placed Saturn and an afflicted Saturn produce noticeably different outcomes from the same position.
↳ Is Ketu in Anuradha Nakshatra good or bad?
Astrology of this kind does not issue verdicts, and this site will not pretend otherwise. Mitra as the presiding deity sets the theme; what a person does inside that theme is not fixed by it. A placement the texts call difficult usually marks where work has been assigned, not where failure is guaranteed, and it often correlates with unusual capability in the same area.
↳ What remedies does Jain practice suggest for Ketu in Anuradha?
Nothing is done to you by Ketu. Classical Jain thought files astrology under the nimitta-shastras, the sciences of signs, and a sign points at what is rather than producing it. Anuradha's deity Mitra names the first of the four bhavanas, maitri, and this placement supplies friendliness and steadiness already, while pramoda, gladness, is what has thinned. The doctrinal caution is not to mistake an absence of pull for madhyastha, equanimity. What the tradition offers is work you do yourself: tapas undertaken on your own account, 48 minutes of samayik, pratikraman attentive to where steadiness replaced discrimination, dana and especially abhaydana with a stated limit, swadhyay, and kshama asked and granted. No gemstone is recommended, since mining is himsa to earth-bodied beings, and no fire ritual, since that is himsa to fire-bodied beings. See the full Jain position on remedies.
