Rohini is the most materially generous nakshatra in the zodiac. It is the Moon’s own star, sitting in the sign of the Moon’s exaltation, presided over by Brahma in his aspect as Prajapati — lord of creatures, the one from whom all generated things proceed. Its shakti is rohana, the power of growth. Its symbol is an ox cart loaded and moving.

Ketu here indicates that the cart has already been loaded, driven, and unloaded at the destination.

This is one of the most consistently misread placements in the nakshatra system, because everything about Rohini promises abundance and everything about Ketu withdraws interest from it. The result is a person who can generate beauty, comfort and material substance with unusual ease, and who does not particularly want any of it. Family members find this incomprehensible. So, frequently, does the native.

The Nakshatra: The Moon, Prajapati, and the Ox Cart

Rohini occupies 10°00’ to 23°20’ of Taurus — the rich middle of the sign, anchored by Aldebaran, the red eye of the celestial bull. The name comes from rohana, which carries two senses at once: the red one, and the growing one. Both are accurate. Rohini is the star of visible increase.

Its ruler is the Moon, and this is unusual in a specific way: the Moon rules Rohini and is exalted in Taurus, so a planet in Rohini is standing on ground where the lunar principle is at maximum strength. Nourishment, mind, memory, the mother, the body’s capacity to receive and hold — all of this operates here at full power.

The presiding deity is Prajapati, Brahma in his generative aspect, the lord of created beings. His entire function is bringing things into existence, and Rohini carries that function as its essential nature: fertility of every kind, biological, artistic, agricultural, commercial. The mythology attached to the star is the account of Chandra’s marriage to the twenty-seven daughters of Daksha, and his open preference for Rohini above the other twenty-six — a favouritism so pronounced that Daksha cursed him with the waning that produces the lunar cycle. The Moon lingers here. That is the star’s reputation.

The symbol is an ox cart: not empty, not stationary, but loaded and in motion toward somewhere. Slow, patient, fertile progress carrying real weight.

Now place Ketu in it.

What Ketu Signifies

Ketu is the descending node of the Moon, the southern intersection of the lunar orbit with the ecliptic. It has no disc, no light, and no sign lordship. In the Puranic account it is the severed lower body of Svarbhanu — immortal, because the nectar had already been swallowed, and blind, because the eyes departed with the head.

In a chart it marks completion. The nakshatra Ketu occupies identifies a domain the soul has already worked through: capability without appetite, skill without curiosity, an area of life where the person is good and uninterested at the same time.

This is why Ketu is described as the graha of past-life karma. Not memory, which belongs to the Moon, and not craving, which belongs to Rahu. Ketu carries accomplishment — work already finished. The detachment that follows is not a virtue anyone practised. It arrived pre-installed, and it is frequently inconvenient, since the world rewards appetite and this placement has none in the relevant field.

Ketu also indicates psychic permeability, knowledge without a source, and the intermittent sense that an experience is a repetition. It governs moksha, since release is only available from what has been fully worked through — which is precisely why Rohini’s purushartha being moksha matters so much here.

And Ketu indicates. It does not cause. That distinction is the basis of the Jain reading below.

Ketu in Rohini: The Interaction

Everything grows and nothing is kept. The productive capacity is intact. These natives can make things flourish — gardens, businesses, households, other people’s confidence — with a facility that others find remarkable. What is absent is the wish to accumulate the result. Money comes and goes without much emotional weight. Possessions are acquired and given away. Homes are built beautifully and then left. Ketu does not remove Rohini’s fertility; it removes the attachment to the harvest.

Beauty without vanity, and often without recognition of it. A recurring and quite specific pattern: natives who are physically striking and genuinely unaware of it, or aware and unmoved. Rohini governs appearance, voice, and physical presence, and Ketu here produces people who possess these advantages and treat them as irrelevant facts about themselves. This can read as modesty. It is closer to indifference.

Sensory satiation. The Taurus senses are all worked through. Food, touch, fragrance, music, texture — the native has extraordinary discrimination in all of them and rarely pursues any of them. Many describe having had an intensely sensory period earlier in life and a long quieting since. Partners often experience this as withdrawal and take it personally, and it is worth naming accurately: this is not a judgement about them.

Emotional self-sufficiency that becomes unreachability. Because the Moon rules Rohini, Ketu’s detachment lands on lunar territory: emotional need, the mother, comfort, the whole apparatus of being held. Natives tend to be emotionally competent and emotionally closed — very good at steadying other people and almost incapable of asking for the same. Mothers, and the native’s relationship to their own mothering instinct, frequently carry unresolved material. This is one of the more difficult features of the placement and one of the most workable.

Creative capacity that never converts. Rohini is the star of making, and this placement carries genuine artistic ability that repeatedly stops short of finished work. Not from blockage — from indifference to the finished state. The painting is begun and abandoned not because it is going badly but because it is going well and the native has stopped caring how it ends.

A pull toward simplicity that others read as waste. Left alone, this placement drifts toward less: smaller home, fewer possessions, plainer food, quieter life. To a family that recognises the native’s earning capacity, this looks like squandering. To the native it feels like relief. Rohini’s assigned purushartha is moksha, which is a strange assignment for the zodiac’s most abundant star, and Ketu here makes the strangeness explicit.

The Four Padas

Each pada spans 3°20’. In Rohini the navamsa sequence runs Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer.

Pada 1: 10°00’ to 13°20’ Taurus — Aries navamsa (Mars)

Mars injects initiative into an otherwise placid placement. This is the Rohini Ketu that actually builds something: launches the enterprise, plants the orchard, starts the practice. The detachment is still present, but the Mars navamsa supplies enough forward pressure to overcome the inertia the other padas struggle with. Strong signature for agriculture, food enterprise, fertility medicine, physical craft, and any building work that is done with the hands. The shadow is abrupt disposal — the native who spends five years constructing something and dismantles it in a weekend. The work is a mandatory delay between the impulse to leave and the leaving.

Pada 2: 13°20’ to 16°40’ Taurus — Taurus navamsa (Venus) — vargottama

The same sign in rashi and navamsa, which concentrates everything. This is Rohini at its most saturated, and Ketu in it produces the placement’s purest expression: a person of considerable beauty, considerable material capability, and near-total disinterest in either. The natural aesthetic sense is exceptional. The wish to deploy it is absent. Natives frequently end up as the person everyone consults about taste who owns almost nothing. The shadow is a comfortable, undemanding stillness that slowly narrows the life. The work is deliberate movement — choosing, at intervals, to do the thing that is not comfortable, since nothing internal will prompt it.

Pada 3: 16°40’ to 20°00’ Taurus — Gemini navamsa (Mercury)

Mercury gives the placement language. This pada talks, writes, teaches and explains what the other padas merely sense. Strong for food and arts writing, criticism, translation, teaching in embodied traditions, and any work that puts sensory knowledge into words. The Ketu detachment here lands on information and on the sensory life simultaneously, producing someone who describes beauty accurately from a slight remove. The shadow is substituting the description for the experience — writing about the meal rather than eating it. The work is direct sensory contact, undertaken on purpose.

Pada 4: 20°00’ to 23°20’ Taurus — Cancer navamsa (Moon)

The Moon rules the nakshatra and the navamsa, and is exalted in the rashi sign. Lunar dignity is layered three deep, and Ketu sits in the middle of it. This produces the most emotionally saturated and most difficult pada: an enormous capacity for nurture combined with a detachment from the entire domain of home, mother and belonging. Natives are often the anchor of a family they feel no particular attachment to. Psychic sensitivity is pronounced and usually present from childhood. Ancestral and maternal material is live. The work is not to generate attachment, which cannot be manufactured, but to act with care regardless of what is felt — which is a distinction this pada learns unusually well.

Vimshottari Dasha: When This Placement Speaks

Two dashas activate this placement: Ketu’s own seven years, and the Moon’s ten as nakshatra lord.

Moon mahadasha. Ten years during which Rohini’s promise is delivered through lunar channels — home, mother, emotional life, nourishment, public feeling. For this placement, the decade tends to bring the goods and withhold the satisfaction. Property arrives, families form, comfort accumulates, and the native moves through it with a persistent sense of watching from slightly outside. The Moon is exalted in Taurus and strong as nakshatra lord, so what arrives is usually substantial. The flatness is not a failure of the dasha; it is the placement showing through it.

Ketu mahadasha. Seven years of unloading. Characteristically, something material goes: a house sold, a business closed, an inheritance dispersed, a long-held standard of living deliberately reduced. Natives rarely experience this as loss at the time and often find it difficult to explain to anyone else. Emotional material is also live, particularly around the mother. The period is disorienting and it tends to leave the native with less and lighter.

Ketu antardasha elsewhere. Fixed by mahadasha lord: 4.2 months in Sun, 7 in Moon, 4.9 in Mars, 12.6 in Rahu, 11.2 in Jupiter, 13.3 in Saturn, 11.9 in Mercury, 14 in Venus. The Moon–Ketu antardasha of seven months is the most concentrated expression available, placing nakshatra lord and occupant together.

The Rahu Axis: Anuradha and Jyeshtha

Rahu sits opposite in Anuradha padas 3–4 or Jyeshtha padas 1–2, in Scorpio.

Rohini is the surface world at its most fertile: growth, beauty, comfort, the visible increase of things. Scorpio is the underside. Anuradha asks for devotion that survives difficulty; Jyeshtha asks for the willingness to hold seniority, to protect, and to descend into what is hidden.

The instruction is unusually clear here. Ketu in Rohini has already mastered the pleasant. The garden is finished. What the soul has not done is go under — into crisis, into the parts of intimacy that are not beautiful, into the material that comfort exists to keep at bay. Anuradha’s version of this is loyalty tested past the point where the relationship is enjoyable. Jyeshtha’s version is taking responsibility that cannot be handed on.

Natives frequently find that life supplies this whether or not they seek it: the illness, the crisis, the person who cannot be nurtured back into ease and has to be sat with anyway. That is the axis doing its work.

Where the Work Sits

Comfort as an anaesthetic. The placement’s easiest failure mode is a life so undemanding that nothing in it ever asks for anything. Because the native is genuinely content with little, there is no internal alarm. The countermeasure has to be structural: commitments made in advance that cannot be quietly abandoned.

Being unreachable. Partners and children of Rohini Ketu natives commonly report the same thing — that the person is kind, present, and somehow not available. The detachment is real and it is not personal, and saying so directly relieves a great deal. What can be offered instead of feeling is reliability, and this placement is very capable of that.

The unfinished work. Creative and productive output that stops short of completion is close to universal here. The fix is external structure — deadlines held by someone else, collaborators, commissions — rather than any attempt to generate the missing motivation.

Money treated as weather. Income arrives and departs without much registering. Where dependents exist, this becomes other people’s problem. Automated systems that remove the decision from the moment work far better than any resolution to be more careful.

The mother question. Almost always live, and almost always unexamined, because the native’s detachment makes it seem unimportant. It usually is not. Direct attention to it, once, is worth more than years of managing around it.

The Jain Reading

Jain thought places astrology within the nimitta-shastras, the sciences of signs. A sign points; it does not produce. The graha is an indicator of karma the soul bound by its own activity, and appeasing an indicator changes nothing about what it indicates.

Rohini makes this unusually easy to see, because the placement’s core feature is an absence of desire, and Jain doctrine has a precise account of what desire is. Attachment — raga — is one of the passions, kashaya, by which karmic matter is bound to the soul. Where attachment thins, binding thins. Ketu in Rohini indicates exactly that: mohaniya karma around the sensory and material world already substantially shed. The result is not a deficiency. It is nirjara, shedding, visible in the biography as an unaccountable indifference to things everyone else is still chasing.

Rohini’s assigned purushartha is moksha, which is otherwise a puzzling label for the zodiac’s most abundant star. With Ketu here it stops being puzzling. Abundance fully consumed is the shortest route to being finished with abundance.

None of this is being done to the native, and none of it can be adjusted by ritual. What remains is conduct.

What the tradition offers instead:

  • Tapas. Fasting by degree, from navkarsi through ekasana to upvas. This placement finds fasting easy, which is precisely why it needs care: austerity that costs nothing is not austerity. Choose the form that is actually difficult, which for Rohini Ketu is usually not food but vritti-sankshepa, the deliberate narrowing of the number of things one permits oneself.
  • Samayik. Forty-eight minutes of equanimity. Rohini Ketu is naturally still and can sit for a long time without arriving anywhere. Use the period actively: not sitting comfortably, but noticing what is actually present.
  • Pratikraman. Retrospection against the vows. For this placement the productive area is aparigraha, non-possession, read from an unusual angle — not whether you own too much, but whether your indifference to possession has quietly transferred the burden of provision onto somebody else.
  • Dana. Giving, which this placement does naturally and often carelessly. The discipline is to give with attention: aharadana, the giving of food, is the natural form for a Rohini placement, undertaken deliberately and repeatedly rather than impulsively.
  • Kshama. Forgiveness asked and granted. What most often needs it here is the unreachability — the people who spent years feeling unwanted by someone who felt nothing against them at all.
  • Swadhyay. Study. For a placement this comfortable, the useful study is the kind that unsettles rather than reassures.

Not recommended: gemstones. A stone must be mined, and mining is himsa to the earth-bodied beings, prithvikaya, that Jain cosmology counts as living. Cat’s eye for Ketu, pearl for the Moon, and every proposed substitute fall under the same objection. It is doctrinal and admits no workaround.

Not recommended: fire rituals. Homa and havan are himsa to fire-bodied beings, tejaskaya, and to whatever the flame consumes. Mantra and intention do not alter the fact.

Both also treat the graha as the agent, which it never was. See the full Jain position on remedies.

Common Questions

Why do I have every advantage and want none of it? Because Ketu indicates completion in the domain it occupies, and the domain here is material and sensory abundance. The capability is real and the appetite is spent. This is not depression, though it is regularly mistaken for it, sometimes by the native. The distinguishing mark is that depression flattens everything, while Ketu flattens one specific field and leaves the rest intact.

Is this a bad placement for wealth? It is a poor placement for the accumulation of wealth and a very good one for its generation. Many people with Ketu in Rohini earn substantially and hold nothing. Whether that is a problem depends entirely on who else depends on them.

Why does my partner say I am not there? Because the Moon rules this star and Ketu has thinned the emotional need it governs. You are present and not needy, and to somebody who reads need as love, that reads as absence. The workable response is not manufactured feeling but consistent, visible, practical care.

Does Ketu in Rohini indicate problems with the mother? It indicates that maternal material is part of what this placement has to work through, which is not the same as blame. Often the relationship is fine on the surface and unexamined underneath. Examining it once tends to be worth the discomfort.

Frequently asked questions

↳ What does Ketu in Rohini Nakshatra mean?

Rohini spans Taurus 10deg00-23deg20 and is ruled by the Moon, with Brahma as Prajapati, the creator, as its presiding deity and an ox cart as its symbol. Ketu carries detachment, past-life residue and what the soul has already finished. So this placement indicates completed mastery of creation, beauty and material abundance, held now without the wish to accumulate any of it. The nakshatra lord matters more than the sign here, because it governs the Vimshottari dasha sequence the placement will run through.

↳ Who rules Rohini Nakshatra, and why does that matter?

The Moon rules Rohini, and the Moon is also exalted in Taurus, so the nakshatra lord is unusually strong here. That matters for two practical reasons. First, the Moon mahadasha of ten years will activate everything this Ketu placement indicates. Second, the condition of the Moon elsewhere in the chart modifies the placement substantially, so a well-placed Moon and an afflicted Moon produce noticeably different outcomes from the same position.

↳ Is Ketu in Rohini Nakshatra good or bad?

Astrology of this kind does not issue verdicts, and this site will not pretend otherwise. Prajapati as the presiding deity sets the theme; what a person does inside that theme is not fixed by it. A placement the texts call difficult usually marks where work has been assigned, not where failure is guaranteed, and it often correlates with unusual capability in the same area.

↳ What remedies does Jain practice suggest for Ketu in Rohini?

Nothing is done to you by Ketu. Classical Jain thought files astrology under the nimitta-shastras, the sciences of signs, and a sign points at what is rather than producing it. Ketu indicates karma the soul has already bound, so the placement cannot be appeased. What the tradition offers instead is work you do yourself: tapas by degree, 48 minutes of samayik, pratikraman with attention to non-possession, dana and especially aharadana, swadhyay, and kshama asked and granted. No gemstone is recommended, since mining is himsa to earth-bodied beings, and no fire ritual, since that is himsa to fire-bodied beings. See the full Jain position on remedies.
