Shravana means hearing. The symbol is an ear, and the tradition means that plainly rather than poetically: this is the mansion of the faculty by which knowledge was transmitted before it was written down. The entire Vedic corpus is shruti, that which was heard. An oral tradition survives on the accuracy of ears, and a culture that placed its whole inheritance in that faculty was not being sentimental when it gave one of its twenty-seven mansions to it.
The deity is Vishnu, the preserver, and the alternative symbol is his three footprints — the three strides of the Vamana avatar, by which he covered earth, sky and everything beyond in three steps. What Vishnu does across all his avatars is maintain: he does not create and he does not destroy, he keeps things going. The pairing of the ear with the preserver is exact. What is heard accurately is what survives.
Venus placed here loves by listening. That sounds slight until one considers how rare it actually is. These natives give the thing almost nobody gives — undivided, patient, non-interrupting attention — and they give it as a matter of course rather than as an effort. Partners of Shravana Venus natives frequently report that they were heard properly for the first time in their lives, and that they did not know until then how much that was worth.
Capricorn supplies the structure and the Moon supplies the sensitivity, and the two together produce a placement that is receptive without being weak: the listener who is also the person holding everything together.

The Mansion Itself: Lord, Deity, Symbol, Span
Shravana is the twenty-second nakshatra, spanning 21 × 13°20’ to 22 × 13°20’ from 0° Aries — 280° to 293°20’. That places it at 10°00’ to 23°20’ of Capricorn, entirely within a single sign, in the middle of Saturn’s earth sign.
The sign lord is Saturn: structure, duty, patience, the long view. Saturn is a friend of Venus in the classical scheme, so the sign condition here is favourable, a point worth making because Capricorn is habitually read as an unfriendly place for a planet of pleasure. It is not. It is a place where pleasure is organised.
The nakshatra lord is the Moon: feeling, receptivity, memory, the domestic. The Moon is not a friend of Venus in the classical friendships, and the interesting result of that is not hostility but a certain tension between the two most receptive significators in the chart. What emerges is a placement that absorbs a very great deal and processes it slowly.
Vishnu presides, and the shakti is samhanana shakti, the power of connection or joining. The traditional gloss involves the linking of separated things, and Shravana natives are frequently the connective tissue in a family, a community or an organisation — the one who keeps in touch with everybody, who knows what is happening to whom, who introduces the two people who needed to meet.
The name also carries a second meaning worth noting: shravana is hearing, and by extension it is what is heard about a person. This is a mansion associated with reputation and with fame in the older sense of being widely spoken of. That association shows up in these charts reliably.
What Venus Actually Signifies
Shukra is the natural significator of marriage and the marriage partner, of romantic and sexual desire, of the capacity for pleasure, and of every form of refinement by which a person separates the merely functional from the genuinely beautiful. It governs art, music, dance, poetry, ornament, perfume, silk, flowers and sweetness. It governs vehicles. It governs the kidneys and the reproductive system. As lord of Taurus and Libra it rules the second house of accumulated value and the seventh house of the other person.
And beneath all of it, Venus is the capacity for enjoyment itself — the faculty rather than its objects. Two people are handed the same afternoon; one can taste it and one cannot.
Shravana modifies the faculty by routing it through the ear. This is the most aurally sensitive Venus placement in the zodiac. Music is not a hobby here; it is close to a physical requirement, and the native’s mood, health and capacity to work all track what they have been listening to. A room with the wrong sound in it is genuinely uninhabitable for these people, and the placement’s most reliable practical instruction is that its pleasures are sonic first and everything else second.
Venus in Shravana: The Specific Chemistry
Listening is the mode of love. These natives attend. They remember what was said three years ago, they notice the thing the partner did not quite say, and they do not fill silences. It is a form of care that is easy to overlook precisely because it is undemanding.
Attraction follows the voice. Of all Venus placements this is the one that falls in love with how somebody sounds — timbre, cadence, the way they laugh, what they choose to say. Physical appearance matters less here than in almost any other placement, and voice matters more.
The preserving instinct is strong. Vishnu’s signature. This Venus maintains: relationships, friendships, family connections, traditions, the ongoing thread of things. It rarely lets a connection lapse and often carries a friendship single-handedly for years without resentment.
Capricorn supplies the spine. Underneath the receptivity is a serious, structural, quietly ambitious person. Shravana Venus is not soft in the sense of being pliable. It holds a great deal and it holds it steadily, and it takes on responsibility for other people’s wellbeing as a matter of course.
And the placement absorbs. The doubled receptivity of a lunar-ruled Venus means these natives take in more than they can process. They come home from a difficult day carrying other people’s states, and unless they have deliberately built a way to put it down, they carry it for a very long time.
The Four Padas
Each pada spans 3°20’ and takes its character from the navamsa sign it falls into.
Pada 1: 10°00’ to 13°20’ Capricorn — Aries Navamsa (Mars)
Mars’s navamsa gives the quarter energy and initiative, which the mansion otherwise lacks. These natives act on what they hear rather than merely receiving it, and they are the most assertive part of Shravana by a considerable margin. Careers in leadership, advocacy, competitive fields and anything requiring somebody to make a decision suit this quarter. The work is that Mars in a listening mansion produces someone who interrupts — not from rudeness but from urgency — and who has to learn that the information usually arrives at the end of the sentence.
Pada 2: 13°20’ to 16°40’ Capricorn — Taurus Navamsa (Venus)
Venus in its own sign in the navamsa: the most sensually developed and materially fortunate quarter of the four. Voice is often exceptional here, in the literal sense — singers, speakers, broadcasters. Food, comfort, texture and above all music are central. Financially this is the strongest quarter, with a real instinct for what holds value. The work is that comfort and steadiness make an easy alliance, and this native can build an extremely pleasant life and stop noticing that they stopped choosing it.
Pada 3: 16°40’ to 20°00’ Capricorn — Gemini Navamsa (Mercury)
Mercury’s navamsa turns hearing into speech. These are the Shravana natives who transmit what they have taken in — teachers, writers, broadcasters, translators, interviewers. They are unusually good at drawing other people out, and unusually good at rendering complicated material intelligible. Media, education, publishing, counselling and negotiation suit this quarter. The work is that Mercury can convert listening into commentary, and this native can end up narrating other people’s lives rather than living their own.
Pada 4: 20°00’ to 23°20’ Capricorn — Cancer Navamsa (Moon)
The Moon’s navamsa under the Moon’s own nakshatra rulership makes this the most emotional and most permeable quarter in the mansion. Feeling runs very close to the surface, the domestic is central, and the capacity for care is enormous. Counselling, nursing, hospitality, family enterprise and pastoral work suit this quarter. The work is that a doubled Moon in a receptive mansion has almost no filter, and this native must build deliberately what other people are given free — a way of distinguishing their own state from the state of the room.
Marriage, Matching, and What This Site Will Not Do
Shravana has a generally favourable classical reputation, and this section applies to a good reputation the same scepticism it would apply to a bad one.
What the classical material says. Deva gana, Moon-ruled, presided over by Vishnu, with a shakti of connection. The traditional readings emphasise learning, good conduct, reputation, an ability to work with people, and success in fields involving knowledge and communication. It is one of the mansions that is recommended rather than cautioned about.
Why that is not a recommendation. A family told that a proposal carries an auspicious placement will skip exactly the enquiries that matter — how this person behaves under strain, how they treat those who cannot help them, whether they keep their word. A chart cannot answer any of that. Being praised by a placement is no more informative about conduct than being warned about by one, and the second error is less discussed only because it announces itself later.
On guna milan. Ashtakoota matching is computed from the Moon’s nakshatra in each chart. Venus’s nakshatra does not enter the calculation at any point, so a Venus in Shravana contributes nothing to a guna milan score. Anyone presenting a Venus-nakshatra reading as a compatibility figure is presenting something the method does not contain.
On Manglik dosha. Several schools count Manglik (Kuja) dosha from Venus as well as from the Lagna and the Moon — Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th counted from Venus. The cancellations are extensive: both partners carrying it; Mars in its own sign or exaltation, and Mars is exalted in Capricorn, which is the sign this whole mansion occupies; Jupiter aspecting Mars or the seventh house, which most authorities call the strongest single cancellation; benefics conjoining or aspecting Mars; Mars in a benefic’s nakshatra; marriage after Mars’s maturity at twenty-eight.
The position of this site. A chart is not grounds to refuse a human being and it is not grounds to accept one. A placement can indicate that somebody listens well and preserves what they are given. It cannot indicate whether they are honest, whether they are brave, or what they will do in a year that goes badly. Those are conduct, chosen daily by a person who can be met and spoken with directly.
What the placement genuinely indicates about partnership. Shravana Venus natives need to be talked to. That is the requirement, stated plainly, and it is more specific than it sounds: they need a partner who shares an interior life out loud, because listening is how this native participates, and a partner who does not speak leaves them without a role. Silence in this marriage is not neutral; it is starvation.
What they should watch in themselves is the passivity that the placement makes available. Listening is a genuine act and it is not a substitute for acting. There is a version of this Venus that hears everything, understands everything, forgives everything, and never once says what it wants — and that produces a marriage in which one person has been fully known for twenty years and the other has not been known at all. The corrective is to speak first sometimes, before being asked, about something that matters.
Art, Aesthetics and Vocation
The creative signature is sound. Whatever field these natives end up in, the aural component of it is where they are strongest — the rhythm of a sentence, the sound of a room, the pacing of a film, the timbre of a recording. A very large number of them are musicians, and most of the rest should be.
Vocationally, the strongest fields sit where Venus’s territory meets the ear: music of every kind, performance and composition; broadcasting, podcasting and audio production; teaching and lecturing; counselling, therapy and pastoral work; interviewing and journalism; translation and languages; publishing and editing; and any advisory role where the primary skill is understanding what somebody actually means. Vishnu’s preserving significations add archives, libraries, museums and heritage work. The Capricorn sign adds institutional administration, and this placement runs organisations well precisely because it hears what is going on in them.
What does not suit it is a noisy or acoustically hostile environment, or work in which nobody is listened to.
Wealth, Vehicles and the Material Life
Money is handled steadily. Saturn’s sign supplies planning and Capricorn’s patience supplies the horizon, and this placement generally accumulates slowly and does not lose what it accumulates. Income often comes through knowledge, reputation and connection rather than through direct production — the recommendation, the referral, the person who thought of you.
Spending goes toward sound and toward home, in that order. Audio equipment, instruments and music are the reliable indulgence, and it is one worth funding rather than resisting, because it is genuinely load-bearing for this placement’s wellbeing. Vehicles are chosen for reliability and comfort, and how they sound matters more than the native usually admits.
The financial risk is a certain over-responsibility: this native ends up supporting people, quietly, over long periods, and rarely mentions it.
Vimshottari Dasha: Venus’s Twenty Years
Venus holds the longest mahadasha in the Vimshottari system — twenty years out of a hundred and twenty. Saturn gets nineteen, Rahu eighteen, Mercury seventeen, the Sun six. The rishis were making a claim by that allocation: refinement takes time.
Venus mahadasha with Venus in Shravana tends to bring reputation and relationship up together. The characteristic shape is that the native becomes known — for their work, their teaching, their voice, their reliability — during the period, and that a partnership forms or deepens around that. Creative work in music and communication is often at its best here, and the placement’s connective capacity typically produces a network during these years that supports the rest of the life.
Moon mahadasha — ten years, and the nakshatra lord’s own — activates this Venus whether or not Venus is otherwise prominent. Moon periods here bring home, family, the mother and emotional life to the front, and they soften the Capricorn reserve considerably. They are also the periods in which the placement’s permeability is highest, and a native who has not built a way to put other people’s states down will find these years tiring in a way that is hard to explain to anyone.
Antardashas to watch. Venus–Moon and Moon–Venus put the two lords into direct conversation and are usually the sub-periods with the most feeling and the least protection in them. Venus–Saturn and Saturn–Venus are structural, slow and productive, and generally where the material position is built. Venus–Jupiter is the kindest stretch for marriage and money. Venus–Mercury favours teaching, writing and anything involving the transmission of what the native knows.
The Shadow
The characteristic failure of this placement is the unspoken life. A person this good at receiving can go decades without transmitting, and the people who love them will assume, reasonably, that there was nothing to transmit. It is not secrecy. It is a habit of deferral in conversation that becomes, eventually, a marriage in which one person’s inner world has never come up.
The second failure is preservation past the point of usefulness. Vishnu maintains, and this Venus maintains — friendships that ended years ago, arrangements that no longer suit anyone, a version of a relationship that both parties have outgrown. Ending things is genuinely hard here, and the difficulty gets described as loyalty.
The third is absorption. The placement takes in what it is around, and without a practice for putting it down the native accumulates other people’s difficulties in a way that eventually shows up in the body. This is one of the few placements for which the standard advice about rest is not a platitude.
The Jain Reading: Venus Indicates, It Does Not Cause
Everything above describes a correlation. Here is why this site does not describe it as a cause.
In Jain doctrine the grahas are not agents. The luminaries and planets are the vimanas of the jyotishka devas, a class of celestial being that moves according to its own nature and has no jurisdiction over any soul. There is no creator issuing decrees and no deity distributing fortune, so nothing in the sky can hand anyone a marriage, a reputation or a good name.
Shravana calls for one further clarification. Jain doctrine does not accept Vishnu as a preserving god administering the world, and there is no point blurring that. In the Jain account the universe is uncreated, beginningless and not maintained by anyone; it operates by its own nature. What survives from the mansion’s symbolism is not the deity but the faculty, and the faculty happens to be one Jainism holds in extremely high regard.
That regard is worth spelling out, because it is the most interesting thing in this article. Jain epistemology names five kinds of knowledge, and the second of them is shruta jnana — knowledge derived from what has been heard or taught, the scriptural knowledge transmitted from the Tirthankaras through the tradition. The entire Jain canon is called the Agama, and its authority rests on a chain of accurate hearing. There is no better fit for a nakshatra of the ear. The related practice on the layperson’s list is swadhyay, study, which in Jain usage includes listening to teaching as much as reading it.
What determines the shape of a life is karma — not a moral ledger but a subtle material substance, drawn to the soul by its own activity of thought, speech and body, adhering, ripening on a schedule, and falling away. Everything described here is the fruit of karma the soul bound for itself. And the Jain classification of living beings is built on precisely the faculty this mansion concerns: beings are graded by how many senses they possess, from one-sensed earth, water, fire, air and plant bodies up to the five-sensed beings that hear. Hearing is the fifth and last sense to be acquired, which makes the ear, in this system, the mark of the most developed embodied life.
The Venus-specific karmas are the standard set. The capacity for enjoyment corresponds to bhogantaraya and upabhogantaraya karma, two of the five antaraya or obstructive karmas. Attraction falls under mohaniya karma, the deluding karma, in the nokashaya or quasi-passions, which include rati and arati. Beauty, voice and grace fall under nama karma, and the sub-variety governing voice is directly relevant to a placement that lives by sound. Pleasure and pain as sensation fall under vedaniya karma.
The senses are, in Jain thought, the exact place where new karma is bound — the point of contact between a sense and its object is where attachment and aversion arise and where fresh karmic matter is drawn in. The relevant sense here is shrotra, hearing, and the observation for this placement is neither indulgent nor shaming: a native who takes this much pleasure in sound has a great deal of karmic traffic at that point, and the tradition’s response is not to stop listening but to notice the listening. The same faculty that binds through attachment to what is pleasant is the faculty by which shruta jnana arrives. It is one ear.
None of it is caused by Shukra. Venus is where the astrologer reads it. If a planet caused the difficulty, propitiating it would be rational and an industry exists to sell that propitiation. If the planet indicates, propitiation is painting over a gauge.
For a Shravana Venus, the Jain response to a difficult Venus or Moon period is not a stone and not a fire. It is swadhyay, study, which for this placement is the most natural and most productive of all the practices; samayik, forty-eight minutes of stillness, in which the native hears nothing from anybody and is asked to notice what remains; tapas, graded fasting; pratikraman, the review of conduct against the vows; dana, giving, especially abhaydana, the gift of fearlessness; and kshama, the asking and granting of forgiveness. All free. None of them harm anything. And unlike a gemstone, they act on the actual cause.
Closing
An oral tradition survives on the accuracy of ears, and a marriage survives on much the same thing. Venus in Shravana gives what almost nobody gives — real attention, held steadily, without waiting for a turn to speak.
The work is the exact inverse of the gift. A person this good at receiving has to be taught, usually by themselves, that the transmission also matters, and that the people who love them are waiting to hear something. Speak first. The listening will still be there afterwards.

The Jain reading of these remedies
Classical Jyotisha prescribes gemstones and fire rituals for afflicted grahas. Jain practice does not use either, and the reason is doctrinal rather than squeamish. A gemstone is mined, which is himsa to the earth-bodied beings (prithvikaya) Jain cosmology counts as living. A fire ritual is himsa to fire-bodied beings (tejaskaya) and to whatever the flame consumes. Neither can be recommended here.
The deeper objection is that both treat the planet as the agent. In the Jain frame the graha causes nothing: it indicates karma the soul has already bound. Appeasing an indicator changes nothing, in the way that painting over a gauge does not change what the gauge was reporting. Only the soul's own effort sheds karma.
What the tradition offers instead, for any difficult period: tapas (fasting, from navkarsi through upvas), samayik (48 minutes of stillness), pratikraman (reviewing conduct against the vows), dana (giving, especially abhaydana, the gift of fearlessness to living creatures), swadhyay (study), and kshama (asking and granting forgiveness). These are free, they harm nothing, and unlike a stone they act on the actual cause.

Frequently asked questions
↳ What does Venus in Shravana Nakshatra mean?
Shravana spans Capricorn 10deg00-23deg20 and is ruled by the Moon, with Vishnu as its presiding deity and an ear as its symbol. Venus carries marriage, desire, art, refinement, vehicles and the capacity for enjoyment. So this placement colours desire through the temperament of the Moon and the character of Vishnu: love expressed as attention, attraction that follows the voice, a strong instinct to preserve connections, and pleasures that are sonic before they are anything else. The nakshatra lord matters more than the sign here, because it governs the Vimshottari dasha sequence the placement will run through.
↳ Why is music so important with this placement?
Because the mansion is the ear. Shravana is the most aurally sensitive Venus placement in the zodiac, and the native's mood, energy and capacity to work track what they have been listening to more closely than they usually realise. A room with the wrong sound in it is genuinely difficult for these people. Treating music as load-bearing rather than as a hobby is the most practical instruction this placement offers.
↳ Does Venus in Shravana indicate a good marriage?
It indicates a partner who listens unusually well and preserves what they are given, which many people find to be exactly what they wanted. It is not a guarantee, because a chart cannot describe conduct. The specific requirement is that the partner talks: listening is how this native participates, so silence in the marriage leaves them without a role. Note also that Ashtakoota matching is computed from the Moon's nakshatra, so a Venus nakshatra does not enter guna milan at all.
↳ What remedies does Jain practice suggest for Venus in Shravana?
Jain doctrine is unambiguous here: Venus is an indicator, not an agent, and in the Jain account the universe is uncreated and not maintained by any deity, so the mansion's symbolism survives as a faculty rather than as a god. That faculty is highly regarded: shruta jnana, knowledge from what is heard, is the second of the five kinds of knowledge, and the whole Jain canon rests on a chain of accurate hearing. So swadhyay, study, is the most natural practice here, alongside samayik, tapas, pratikraman, dana and kshama. No gemstone is recommended, since mining is himsa to earth-bodied beings, and no fire ritual, since that is himsa to fire-bodied beings. See the full Jain position on remedies.
