If Purva Phalguni is the front legs of the bed, Uttara Phalguni is the back legs. The tradition made that pairing deliberately and it is one of the more precise pieces of symbolism in the whole nakshatra system. The front end is where you get in. The back end is what holds the weight for the next thirty years.
Aryaman presides here, and he is worth knowing properly because he is not a famous god and he governs something enormous. He is an Aditya, and his domain is the network of obligations that hold a society together: hospitality, patronage, friendship, and above all the marriage alliance — not the desire that produces a marriage but the agreement that constitutes one. In the Vedic material Aryaman is invoked at weddings. He is the god of the promise, and of the milk-path of custom by which people who are not blood relatives come to owe each other something.
Venus placed here inherits that. This is not the Venus of attraction; attraction is the previous mansion’s business. This is the Venus of commitment, of the arrangement honoured for decades, of the partner who is still there. It is one of the least glamorous Venus placements and one of the most genuinely reliable.
There is a further structural fact that shapes everything: Uttara Phalguni straddles a sign boundary. Its first quarter sits in Leo, the sign of the self and of solar warmth. Its remaining three sit in Virgo, the sign of Venus’s debilitation. The mansion begins in confidence and finishes in scrutiny, and most of what is distinctive about this placement comes from that crossing.

The Mansion Itself: Lord, Deity, Symbol, Span
Uttara Phalguni runs from 26°40’ Leo to 10°00’ Virgo. The arithmetic is worth doing rather than taking on trust: it is the twelfth nakshatra, so it spans 11 × 13°20’ to 12 × 13°20’ from the start of Aries, which is 146°40’ to 160°, and 146°40’ falls at 26°40’ of Leo while 160° falls at 10°00’ of Virgo. Roughly a quarter of the mansion is in a fire sign and three quarters in an earth sign.
The nakshatra lord is the Sun throughout, regardless of which sign a given degree falls in, and the Sun’s contribution is dignity, obligation and visibility. Solar significations run toward duty rather than pleasure, and the Sun is not a friend of Venus in the classical scheme of planetary friendships. That does not make the placement bad. It makes it serious.
The deity is Aryaman. The shakti is chayani shakti, the power of accumulation, and the traditional gloss is precise about the mechanism: what accumulates does so through union, through the pooled resources and pooled effort of a partnership. Two people, staying, building. That is the whole nakshatra.
The Virgo portion introduces Venus’s debilitation, and this needs stating carefully because the word does more damage than the condition. Debilitation is not damage or misfortune. It means the planet is operating in a sign whose qualities are unlike its own, so its significations are expressed with less ease and more self-consciousness. A debilitated Venus does not love less. It doubts more, analyses more, and asks whether it deserves what it wants. The classical literature also provides cancellation conditions — neecha bhanga — under which the debilitation is substantially relieved, most commonly when the lord of the sign of debilitation or the lord of the exaltation sign is well placed from the Lagna or the Moon. Any real chart has to be checked for those before the word is used at all.
What Venus Actually Signifies
Shukra is the natural significator of marriage and the marriage partner, of romantic and sexual desire, of the capacity for pleasure, and of every form of refinement by which a person separates the merely functional from the genuinely beautiful. It governs art, music, dance, poetry, ornament, perfume, silk, flowers and sweetness. It governs vehicles. It governs the kidneys and the reproductive system. As lord of Taurus and Libra it rules the second house of accumulated value and the seventh house of the other person.
And beneath all of it, Venus is the capacity for enjoyment itself — the faculty rather than its objects. Two people are handed the same afternoon; one can taste it and one cannot.
Uttara Phalguni modifies the faculty by attaching a condition to it. The native can enjoy things, and generally only once the obligations are discharged. Pleasure taken before the work is done does not register as pleasure; it registers as unease. This is not asceticism, and these natives are not austere people. It is a sequencing rule, deeply held, and it explains why a placement with so much material comfort in it often looks from outside like a person who never quite relaxes.
Venus in Uttara Phalguni: The Specific Chemistry
Love is expressed as reliability. These natives show up. The gesture is not the flower on the anniversary; it is the fact that in eighteen years they have not once failed to do the thing they said they would do. Partners who read romance in demonstrativeness sometimes take years to recognise what they are being given.
The agreement is treated as real. A promise here is load-bearing. Uttara Phalguni Venus takes vows, contracts and stated intentions with a literalism that other people find either reassuring or unreasonable. The corollary is that a broken promise wounds this placement out of proportion to its content, because what was broken was not a plan but the category.
Partnership has a purpose beyond itself. This Venus is drawn to unions that produce something: a household, a business, a body of work, a family, a standing in a community. A relationship that exists purely for mutual delight will feel to this native like it is missing a load-bearing wall.
Virgo supplies the self-scrutiny. In three quarters of this mansion Venus is debilitated, and the practical shape of that is a persistent internal audit: am I attractive enough, useful enough, deserving of this. These natives are frequently far more competent and far more valued than they believe, and the gap between the two is the placement’s most reliable feature.
The aesthetic is refined and functional. Beauty that works. Good materials, correct proportion, nothing surplus. This Venus notices the badly finished seam and the room that has been decorated rather than designed, and it will choose the plainer object that was made properly every time.
The Four Padas
Each pada spans 3°20’ and takes its character from the navamsa sign it falls into.
Pada 1: 26°40’ to 30°00’ Leo — Sagittarius Navamsa (Jupiter)
The only quarter in the fire sign, and the most generous and least self-doubting of the four. Jupiter’s navamsa gives the commitment a philosophical dimension: these natives want the partnership to mean something, and are drawn to people with a worldview and a public life. Teaching, law, advisory work, publishing and institutional leadership suit this quarter, and the combination of solar dignity with Jupiterian expansiveness produces natural patrons — people who back others and enjoy doing it. The work is that a Venus this confident about principle can be slow to notice that a specific human being in front of it is unhappy.
Pada 2: 0°00’ to 3°20’ Virgo — Capricorn Navamsa (Saturn)
The crossing into Virgo, with Saturn’s earth navamsa underneath, makes this the most dutiful and most restrained quarter in the mansion. Venus is debilitated by sign and the navamsa adds discipline rather than relief. These natives are extremely capable, extremely reliable, and habitually last on their own list. There is real professional strength here — administration, finance, engineering, project management, anything where somebody has to be accountable. The work is that duty performed without any acknowledgement, for long enough, curdles into resentment that the native will not voice and cannot conceal.
Pada 3: 3°20’ to 6°40’ Virgo — Aquarius Navamsa (Saturn)
Saturn again, in its air sign, which lifts the placement out of the purely personal. These natives commit to systems and to communities as readily as to individuals, and the marriage often has a civic dimension — shared work, shared cause, a household that functions as a small institution. Research, public service, technology, organising and the social professions all suit this quarter. The work is a certain coolness: the obligation is honoured impeccably and the warmth that was supposed to accompany it can go missing for years without the native noticing.
Pada 4: 6°40’ to 10°00’ Virgo — Pisces Navamsa (Jupiter)
The closing quarter, and the one where Venus reaches its exaltation sign in the navamsa while sitting in its sign of debilitation in the rashi. That combination is genuinely unusual and it produces the most interesting people in the mansion: outwardly modest, self-questioning, apparently unremarkable, and possessed of a depth of feeling and an artistic or devotional capacity that surfaces only in the right conditions. Healing work, the arts, counselling and service suit this quarter. The work is that Pisces has no natural boundary and Virgo has no natural self-regard, and the combination will give until there is nothing left unless somebody imposes a limit.
Marriage, Matching, and What This Site Will Not Do
This is the mansion of the marriage contract, so it attracts more matchmaking attention than most, and two things get done with it that should not be.
The first is the debilitation. “Venus is debilitated” is one of the most damaging sentences in practical astrology, and it is regularly produced in matchmaking as though it described a defect in a person’s capacity to love. It does not. It describes a planet expressing itself in an unfamiliar idiom — with more analysis, more modesty and more self-doubt than the planet’s own nature prefers. Most classical authorities treat a debilitated planet in a strong house, or with neecha bhanga operating, as capable of producing outstanding results. And in this specific mansion the debilitation sits inside a nakshatra whose entire subject is keeping one’s word, which is not a small thing to be good at.
The second is guna milan. Ashtakoota matching is computed from the Moon’s nakshatra in each chart. Venus’s nakshatra does not enter the calculation at any point. A Venus in Uttara Phalguni — debilitated or otherwise — contributes nothing to a guna milan score. Anyone presenting a Venus-nakshatra reading as a compatibility figure is presenting something the method does not contain.
On Manglik dosha. Several schools count Manglik (Kuja) dosha from Venus as well as from the Lagna and the Moon — Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th counted from Venus. The cancellations are extensive: both partners carrying it; Mars in its own sign or exaltation; Jupiter aspecting Mars or the seventh house, which most authorities call the strongest single cancellation; benefics conjoining or aspecting Mars; Mars in a benefic’s nakshatra; marriage after Mars’s maturity at twenty-eight. Applied honestly, the clauses remove most of the cases the rule catches.
The position of this site. A chart is not grounds to refuse a human being. A placement can indicate that somebody takes agreements seriously and doubts their own desirability. It cannot indicate whether they will be faithful, whether they are kind, or how they will behave in the twentieth year. Those are conduct, chosen daily by a person who can be met and assessed directly. If a reading is being used to withdraw a proposal, it has stopped being astrology and become a social weapon with an astrological handle. We do not supply that handle, and the word debilitated will not be used on this site as a verdict about a person.
What the placement genuinely indicates about partnership. Uttara Phalguni Venus natives are among the most dependable partners in the zodiac and among the least likely to say what they need. Their form of love is the discharge of obligation, which is invisible precisely when it is working. What they require is explicit acknowledgement — not praise, acknowledgement — and a partner who occasionally insists that they stop working. What they should watch in themselves is the slow accumulation of unspoken grievance, and the habit of proving worth by usefulness, which has no natural stopping point.
Art, Aesthetics and Vocation
The creative signature is craft. This placement makes work that is technically sound, unshowy, and better than it appears at first look. Uttara Phalguni Venus is the editor rather than the author, the arranger rather than the composer, the person whose contribution is only obvious when it is removed. Many natives are genuinely excellent and genuinely unconvinced.
Vocationally, the strongest fields sit where Venus’s territory meets Aryaman’s: contract and family law, human resources, marriage and relationship counselling, partnership and alliance management, diplomacy, philanthropy and grant-making, patronage and arts administration, hospitality management, and the whole territory of institutional service. The Virgo element adds precision-dependent work — editing, conservation, restoration, quality control in any aesthetic field, tailoring, dietetics and the practical health professions.
What does not suit it is work requiring self-promotion, or any environment where agreements are treated as flexible. This placement will leave a well-paid job over a broken promise and will be unable to explain, satisfactorily, why.
Wealth, Vehicles and the Material Life
The chayani shakti is a wealth signification and it is specific: accumulation through union. This placement builds material security jointly rather than alone — through marriage, through partnership, through an alliance with an institution. Solo ventures are harder here than the native’s competence would predict, and the reason is not ability but motivation. This Venus works properly when somebody else is depending on the result.
Spending is careful and quality-led. Uttara Phalguni Venus buys the durable thing, maintains it, and keeps it a long time. Vehicles are chosen for reliability and serviced on schedule. The failure mode is not extravagance but a reluctance to spend anything on itself: this is the placement that will fund a partner’s business and refuse to replace its own shoes, and it should treat that as a real problem rather than a virtue.
Vimshottari Dasha: Venus’s Twenty Years
Venus holds the longest mahadasha in the Vimshottari system — twenty years out of a hundred and twenty. Saturn gets nineteen, Rahu eighteen, Mercury seventeen, and the Sun a mere six. The allocation is an argument: refinement takes time, and the education of desire is the work of decades rather than seasons.
Venus mahadasha with Venus in Uttara Phalguni brings agreements to the centre — marriage, partnership, contracts, formal alliances of every kind. The characteristic event of the period is a commitment entered into with full seriousness, and its characteristic difficulty is that the native takes on more obligation than the twenty years can comfortably carry. Wealth generally builds through the period, and it builds jointly.
Sun mahadasha — six years, and the nakshatra lord’s own — is short and pointed. It activates this Venus whether or not Venus is otherwise prominent, and it typically raises the question of the native’s own standing, separate from whatever partnership they have built. The Sun is not a comfortable ruler for Venus, and Sun periods often bring a stretch in which the native has to be visible and would much rather not be. They are usually clarifying.
Antardashas to watch. Venus–Sun and Sun–Venus put the two lords of this placement into direct conversation, and typically force the question of whether the native is being seen. Venus–Mercury and Mercury–Venus intensify the Virgo self-scrutiny and are the sub-periods in which the debilitation, where it operates, is most felt. Venus–Jupiter is generally the kindest stretch of the twenty years for marriage and for money. Venus–Saturn is heavy with duty and is where this placement most needs somebody to insist that it rest.
The Shadow
The characteristic failure of this placement is earning affection instead of receiving it. The native who has decided, somewhere very early, that they are loved for what they provide will keep providing, and will experience any interruption as a threat, and will never test the assumption because the test is unbearable. This produces marriages of extraordinary reliability and considerable loneliness.
The second failure is silent accounting. Uttara Phalguni Venus rarely complains and rarely forgets. The ledger runs quietly for years and is presented, if it is ever presented, all at once, to a partner who had no idea it existed.
The third is contempt disguised as standards. The Virgo portion of this mansion can turn its analytic capacity outward when the self-criticism becomes unbearable, and the result is a partner who is corrected constantly and gently and never quite meets the mark. The native almost never intends this and it is nonetheless corrosive.
The Jain Reading: Venus Indicates, It Does Not Cause
Everything above describes a correlation. Here is why this site does not describe it as a cause.
In Jain doctrine the grahas are not agents. The luminaries and planets are the vimanas of the jyotishka devas, a class of celestial being that moves according to its own nature and has no jurisdiction over any soul. There is no creator issuing decrees and no deity distributing fortune, so nothing in the sky has the authority to hand anyone a marriage or withhold one — and no planet can make a person unworthy of one.
That last clause matters here more than anywhere. Debilitation is the single most misused word in this field, and in the Jain frame its misuse is not merely unkind but incoherent: a planet has no power to confer or withdraw worth, because it has no power to confer or withdraw anything.
What determines the shape of a life is karma — not a moral ledger but a subtle material substance, drawn to the soul by its own activity of thought, speech and body, adhering, ripening on a schedule, and falling away. Everything described in this article is the fruit of karma the soul bound for itself.
The Venus-specific karmas are exact. The capacity for enjoyment corresponds to bhogantaraya and upabhogantaraya karma, the obstruction of enjoyment of consumables and non-consumables, two of the five antaraya or obstructive karmas — and this is the most useful vocabulary available for a debilitated Venus, because it names precisely the condition of a person who has the good thing in front of them and cannot take it. That is not a defect of character. It is antaraya ripening, and antaraya, like every karma, is finite.
Attraction falls under mohaniya karma, the deluding karma, in the nokashaya or quasi-passions, which include rati and arati, attraction and aversion. Beauty, voice and grace fall under nama karma. Pleasure and pain as sensation fall under vedaniya karma.
And the senses are, in Jain thought, the exact place where new karma is bound. The moment of contact between a sense and its object is where attachment and aversion arise and where fresh karmic matter is drawn in. The tradition is not squeamish about this — embodied beings desire things, and pretending otherwise binds more karma than admitting it. For an Uttara Phalguni Venus the specific application is unusual: this placement’s characteristic movement is not indulgence but suppression, and suppression is not the same as detachment. A desire denied while still wanted is raga with a lid on it, and it binds exactly as much. The Jain distinction between renunciation and repression is sharp, and this is the placement that most needs it.
None of it is caused by Shukra. Venus is where the astrologer reads it. If a planet caused the difficulty, propitiating the planet would be rational, and an industry exists to sell that propitiation. If the planet indicates, propitiation is painting over a gauge.
For an Uttara Phalguni Venus, the Jain response to a difficult Venus or Sun period is not a stone and not a fire. It is tapas, graded fasting — undertaken here with particular care, since a placement this inclined to self-denial can turn fasting into another obligation and miss the point entirely; samayik, forty-eight minutes of stillness in which nothing is owed to anyone; pratikraman, the review of conduct against the vows, which is where the silent ledger gets opened; dana, giving, especially abhaydana, the gift of fearlessness; swadhyay, study; and kshama, the asking and granting of forgiveness — and for this placement, the granting is the harder half. All free. None of them harm anything. And unlike a gemstone, they act on the actual cause.
Closing
Aryaman is not a spectacular god. He does not slay anything. What he governs is the unglamorous machinery by which strangers become family and stay that way: the promise, the hospitality, the alliance honoured after the enthusiasm that produced it has gone.
Venus in his mansion loves the same way — quietly, durably, through the back legs of the bed rather than the front. The gift is that this is the half of love that actually holds. The work is to stop treating one’s own share of the comfort as something still to be earned, and to notice that the person on the other side of the agreement has been trying to give it for years.

The Jain reading of these remedies
Classical Jyotisha prescribes gemstones and fire rituals for afflicted grahas. Jain practice does not use either, and the reason is doctrinal rather than squeamish. A gemstone is mined, which is himsa to the earth-bodied beings (prithvikaya) Jain cosmology counts as living. A fire ritual is himsa to fire-bodied beings (tejaskaya) and to whatever the flame consumes. Neither can be recommended here.
The deeper objection is that both treat the planet as the agent. In the Jain frame the graha causes nothing: it indicates karma the soul has already bound. Appeasing an indicator changes nothing, in the way that painting over a gauge does not change what the gauge was reporting. Only the soul's own effort sheds karma.
What the tradition offers instead, for any difficult period: tapas (fasting, from navkarsi through upvas), samayik (48 minutes of stillness), pratikraman (reviewing conduct against the vows), dana (giving, especially abhaydana, the gift of fearlessness to living creatures), swadhyay (study), and kshama (asking and granting forgiveness). These are free, they harm nothing, and unlike a stone they act on the actual cause.

Frequently asked questions
↳ What does Venus in Uttara Phalguni Nakshatra mean?
Uttara Phalguni spans 26deg40 Leo to 10deg00 Virgo and is ruled by the Sun, with Aryaman, the Aditya of patronage and the marriage bond, as its presiding deity and the back legs of a bed as its symbol. Venus carries marriage, desire, art, refinement, vehicles and the capacity for enjoyment. So this placement colours desire through the temperament of the Sun and the character of Aryaman: love expressed as reliability, agreements taken literally, partnership treated as something that must build. The nakshatra lord matters more than the sign here, because it governs the Vimshottari dasha sequence the placement will run through.
↳ Is Venus debilitated in Uttara Phalguni?
In three of the four padas, yes by sign, since padas 2 to 4 fall in Virgo. The word carries far more weight than the condition deserves. Debilitation means a planet is working in an unfamiliar idiom, with more analysis and more self-doubt than its own nature prefers. It is not damage, it is not a defect in the capacity to love, and the classical literature supplies neecha bhanga conditions under which it is substantially relieved, so any real chart must be checked before the word is used at all.
↳ Does this placement affect marriage compatibility?
Not through any recognised calculation. Ashtakoota matching is computed from the Moon's nakshatra in each chart, so Venus's nakshatra does not enter guna milan at any point. What the placement indicates is a partner who keeps agreements, gives through reliability rather than display, and rarely states their own needs. Those are tendencies to work with, never grounds to accept or refuse a person.
↳ What remedies does Jain practice suggest for Venus in Uttara Phalguni?
Jain doctrine is unambiguous here: Venus is an indicator, not an agent, and no planet has the power to make anyone unworthy of anything. For this placement the useful distinction is between renunciation and repression. A desire denied while still wanted binds karma exactly as much as one indulged, so tapas should be undertaken as practice rather than as another obligation. Alongside it: samayik, pratikraman, dana and kshama, of which granting forgiveness is the harder half here. No gemstone is recommended, since mining is himsa to earth-bodied beings, and no fire ritual, since that is himsa to fire-bodied beings. See the full Jain position on remedies.
