Local time in San Francisco Bay Area (America/Los_Angeles), daylight saving included. Computed from the sunrise and sunset at 37.4323, -121.8996; refreshed twice a day.
How these times are worked out
Every pachkhan time is counted from the day's own sunrise, so it changes a little each day and differs from city to city. The day between sunrise and sunset is divided into four prahars (quarters).
Navkarsi (नवकारसी): 48 minutes after sunrise, the earliest time food or water is taken after the night's vow.
Porsi (पोरसी): one prahar, a quarter of the daylight, after sunrise.
Sadh Porsi (साढ़ पोरसी): one and a half prahars after sunrise.
Purimaddh (पुरिमड्ढ): two prahars, midday, when half the daylight has passed.
Avaddh (अवड्ढ): three prahars after sunrise.
Chauvihar and Tivihar: sunset. After it, no food until the next Navkarsi; with chauvihar, no water either.
Sunrise here is the moment the upper edge of the Sun appears, with the usual allowance for the air bending its light, the convention most printed panchangs use. The tithi is the one current at sunrise, which names the whole day.
Your own sangh comes first. Upashrays and gacchas round these times differently, and some add a few minutes of margin. If yours publishes its own times, follow them: the vow is kept with your sangh, not with a website.
Pachkhan times in the San Francisco Bay Area through the year
These times are worked out for Milpitas, in the south of the Bay Area, where the Jain Center of Northern California is. San Jose and Fremont are within a minute or two, and San Francisco itself has sunrise about two minutes later. The Bay Area is on Pacific Time, which moves with daylight saving: clocks go forward on Sunday 8 March 2026 and back on Sunday 1 November 2026. The times above already include the change, so nothing needs adding or subtracting.
Sunrise runs from about 5:45 AM in early June to about 7:30 AM at the end of October, the last morning of daylight saving, and about 7:25 AM in early January. The daylight, and the length of each prahar, is longest in June and shortest in December.
The Jain Center of Northern California (JCNC) was incorporated in 1981 and its website reports over 2,200 members in the Bay Area. If it or your own sangh publishes pachkhan times, follow those where they differ.
For any place and any date, with choghadiya, hora and the kalyanaka of the day, use the Jain Panchang. Run a sangh or derasar website? Add today's panchang to it, free.
